The Board of the Portuguese Society of Neurosurgery decided to create the SPNC merit medal; the regulation was proposed to the General Assembly at Neuroiberia2016 – International Congress of Neurosurgery, held from May 11 to 14 at the Estoril Congress Center, and the regulation was approved. The medal was awarded to Prof. Doctor João Lobo Antunes for his enormous contribution to the prestige of Portuguese Neurosurgery. A well-deserved distinction for his excellence and dedication, both in clinical performance and in training several generations. The medal was presented to him by the president of the SPNC, Dr. Carlos Vara Luiz, at the gala dinner of Neuroiberia 2016.
